Airborne Wind Energy: It’s All Platypuses Instead Of Cheetahs

Companies in the space are still limping along

Over five years ago I published this multi-factorial assessment of the major engineering choices in airborne wind energy and their advantages and disadvantages. It received a lot of attention in the small field then, and I continue to get thanks from students in the space. There has been no real advancement since then, although Alphabet’s Makani managed to get a bigger (but still small) generation into the air at least once.
