Why are motorcycles so loud?

Bikers claim noise is a safety feature. It isn’t.

Motorcycles exceed all noise limits acceptable in civil society not for safety reasons, but because many motorcycle riders are assholes.

Seriously, a lot of bike riders really value absurdly loud bikes because they like the sound and really, fuck anyone else.

There are two classes of riders which are dominated by assholes: Harley Davidson riders and squids.

Harleys could sound like a typical BMW, but instead, they are as loud as legally possible leaving the factory and then are often modified to be louder with aftermarket pipes. If it pisses off the neighbors and their neighbors and their neighbors and the neighbors in the next suburb, fuck them.

Squids are mostly wannabe racers and stunters who don’t have the skills or temperament to keep it on the track, and so they get overpowered bikes that they can often not control, then ride around in flip flops in packs endangering everyone else on the road. They are almost entirely young men and mostly ride Japanese bikes. Like yahoos who put spoilers on Chevettes, they replace the stock pipes which are still insanely noisy with aftermarket pipes which are even noisier in the belief that they get more power that they can’t control and shouldn’t use on streets, and…
