The Future of Design Education Pt. 18
A true form of Designer Mind
A Shift in Mental State
There is often a time early within ones trajectory into a new career that they become — or rather, are asked to become something outside of themselves.
The age old Aristotle quote, “the more you know, the more you don’t know” is a reminder that by its very virtue, knowledge is every expanding — so to is experience — with the difference being that the learning from applied experiences are linear — knowledge can be exponential in nature.
A Designers Falsehood
As designers, it is our deep obligation to retain a true state of mind as we launch experiences into the world. This begins and ends with the user. I have personally heard about young designers entering into a state of mind where there is a sense of faking the very basis of decision-making. Otherwise known as shooting from the hip. This approach is incredibly risky as far as moving a design solution forward.
On Embracing Ambiguity
Instead, we need to remain composed and sound in our design-decisions when embracing complex challenges— even budding designers that are in a formative state of learning hold the capability of thinking critically through a problem-solving framework. In this sense, there is no faking it. We are simply moving through the design process.
