Critical assets operating at maximum efficiency

(demo at bottom)

For the first time at MaximoWorld 2018 in Orlando, Florida, it will be my pleasure to introduce you to our Augmented Intelligence (AI) Powered Manufacturing demo integrated with Maximo. A cross-IBM team collaboratively built a solution proof that shows how Watson IoT can help organizations make smarter decisions about assets by combining IBM Maximo software with multiple data types and AI.

Organizations have embraced the opportunity to collect, consolidate and leverage asset information to optimize asset performance and fine-tune scheduling, especially around predictive maintenance (see figure 1). Predictive maintenance is the number one automation system, according to the IBV’s 2017 Cognitive Manufacturing study, with 64% of respondents saying they have a solution. (1)

Yet, solutions need to be increasingly flexible. Consider that many companies have found collecting IoT data easier than the formidable task of transitioning it into streamlined and productive decision support. That’s what makes AI so central to the next generation of improved manufacturing processes. The ability to combine structured numeric data and myriad other information sources — such as visual and audio files, operator and technician comments and machine guidance and support manuals — requires not just Machine Learning but deeper intelligence. To that end, 49% of electronics executives in IBM’s recent C-Suite study, saw AI significantly impacting manufacturing processes in the next two to three years.(2)

Last, to effectively manage resources, an Enterprise Asset Management solution must optimize multiple assets across systems and processes for greater asset availability, reliability and performance. With Maximo Asset Management, organizations can support planned and unplanned maintenance activities. This ranges from initial service requests to work order generation, through planning, to completion and recording of actual results. It provides an integrated approach to managing discrete or complex assets to help organizations overcome challenges regarding aging infrastructures and in their siloed or disconnected systems.

It’s mission critical for the future of manufacturing to move beyond today’s approaches of connecting systems to collaborating and optimizing. The knowledge that an organization builds through its IoT assets and platforms will be the gateway to optimizing multiple processes simultaneously and heading for autonomous, self learning systems in the near future. Our AI-Powered Manufacturing demo showcases how the layered value of IoT, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Maximo keep critical assets operating at maximum efficiency. It’s about helping industrial companies reduce cost and downtime, maximize asset productivity, reduce risk of business disruption, improve quality and streamline operations to maximize asset operating efficiency by analyzing machines, predicting outages, handling equipment repairs and automating equipment maintenance in real time to streamline global operations.

By combining a very broad range of IBM offerings including Augmented Intelligence, Maximo, Watson IoT, Equipment Maintenance Advisor, Visual Insights, Acoustic Insights and more, we can create a holistic view of the manufacturing process. This allows us to go beyond basic Predictive Maintenance and Asset Management; assisting with determinations around component and product defects and quality, which can affect the manufacturing process as well as the brand. We develop deeper understanding of interconnected quality issues that are not typically obvious. With the integration of Equipment Maintenance Advisor, Watson Personal Assistant, and Business Process Analytics we enable better interactions between business functions and more consistent outcomes across the entire organization.

Resolve quality problems faster and more accurately: The as-is process in manufacturing is heavily reliant on manual processes. This new solution allows you to resolve quality problems faster and more accurately by using deep learning for image analysis that can be trained centrally and executed on low cost hardware at the inspection station. Automating this requires a component that can filter good parts with high confidence and speed, learn effortlessly, and scale across hundreds of defect types. It performs a rich defect analysis and image library to provide significantly more consistent and accurate inspection compared to manual methods via cognitive classification of defects, including confidence thresholds and is applicable across multiple industries impacted by manufacturing quality.

Manage and optimize assets: This AI-Powered Manufacturing demo is powered by IBM Watson and fully integrated with IBM Maximo for asset management. The system monitors production and asset health without human intervention, improving manufacturing yield and asset optimization. During the manufacturing process, IoT data is collected from equipment asset sensors and sent to Maximo in real-time to manage and optimize the use of all assets to achieve greater asset availability, reliability and performance.

Come visit us at MaximoWorld 2018 in Orlando, Florida on August 7–9th at the IBM booth to experience this live AI-Powered Manufacturing demo and see an automated holistic view of a manufacturing process.
