Recently, we (as in Martin G. Kienzle, Rami Ahola, Sunimal Ediriweera, Mikael Edholm and I) caught up with our friends from neXt Curve Leonard Lee and Akshay Sharmato dish on 5G and where the value is. It’s a team of experts explaining why this might be 5G’s moment and why that moment is so much more than faster speeds and feeds.

If you prefer to read our expert insights report, you can download it here.

But please take a listen, we break down the technology a bit (why network slicing and SDNs matter), ecosystems/partnering for fun and profit and why manufacturing offers significant potential.

A couple of graphics if you want the 5 minute flyby: 5G is coming — kind of…it will take a while:

And it has three primary “flavors”:

But while mobile operators are talking a good game, they lack what they need (cash, industry expertise) to push forward with all but EMBB and even that has cashflow dependencies for long term investment:

So, while operators are poised to capture revenue, electronics providers have the equipment and the experience to drive ecosystem partnerships for core use cases:

from Ericsson

And they’ll start in energy and utilities, manufacturing and public safety to cover the first 50% of the marketplace and build the stack.

Please give a listen and leave us feedback.
