Lucis Smart Wireless LED Lighting Is A Portable, Powerful, And Delightful Lamp

If you read my review of the Nanoleaf Aurora and Koogeek LB1, you’ll know that you can never have enough smart lighting. Being able to control your lights with a smartphone app starts as a treat and evolves into a way to simplify your life. However, even with the smartphone app, these lights lack one thing: portability. If you want to move a traditional lamp, you are limited by electrical outlet locations and wire length so you certainly can’t take them outside or adjust them on a whim.

Lucis offers a unique product in the space of smart lighting. It focuses more on outdoor use and mood lighting combined with simplicity rather than a huge feature set. The result is a straightforward, easy to use little lamp you can take wherever you want. This device is:

Pleasant Design

The Lucis lamp has a smooth exterior, minus the charging port cover for splashproof protection on the rear, as the focus here is obviously the light itself. There are a few touch-sensitive buttons on separate sides but they are just little markings on the exterior as opposed to separate buttons. You’ll also notice the lack of a power button. Instead, Lucis is turned on and off by shaking it 3 times. It felt a little silly when I did it the first time but then I realized I didn’t have to shake it like an earthquake.

A very nice touch is the 1/4-inch screw mount on the bottom face. I was able to attach the Lucis to my camera tripod for help with accent lighting some photography scenes which was an unexpected benefit. The 1/4-inch screw mount is also compatible with some accessories, such as a wooden Zebrano tripod or handle. I was able to review the Zebrano tripod, it’s looks and feels excellent and would not look out of place in a formal setting.

Lighting Prowess

As mentioned before, the Lucis lamp has shake and touch sensors which both work pretty reliably but in case you want a more physical touch, there’s a magnetic triangle you can attach or remove. The light itself offers 250 lumens with 16 million different color options. It’s not a flashlight but it is certainly bright and customizable.

Interestingly, there’s a huge gap in the battery life. If you have it at full brightness, you’ll get 8 hours. If you have it on the dimmest setting, you can get close to 80 hours. For outdoor night adventures, you won’t need the full brightness settings so you could get a few nights of usage out of Lucis which makes it great for multiple day trips away from power outlets. Bring a power bank along and charge up the Lucis through its micro USB port and you’ll get even more days. Furthermore, the Zebrano handle plus the lightweight design would make it a useful lantern for not only a campsite but exploring in the dark as well.

I love the design, the accessories, and the relaxing nature of the Lucis lamp. If you’re using it, you’re not going to be working too hard, so enjoy yourself and bask in the colorful lights.

Future Designs

Seeing as Lucis 2.0 improves on pretty much every facet of the original, I only have one suggestion: if the charging port cover could be a bit more flush with the exterior or perhaps made from a different material, it would result in an even smoother shape.
