Hey everyone, welcome (back?) to week one!

So exciting isn’t it? Kind of terrifying for some sure but so full of possibility. I remember last year not being certain whether the shaking feeling was from fear or anticipation. This time around I’m feeling a little more sure of myself, and excited to be your Auditor for 2019/20!

Now, you came for the nitty-gritty. Right, down to business.

What work does Journos (Journalism and Media Soc) accept?

Writing: We accept work of nonfiction mainly but accept fiction as well. Reviews, Opinion pieces, Recipes, Poetry and short stories are all welcome. Our goal is to get students of NUI Galway heard and get their work spread to our member base. Our slogan for this year is

‘Open your eye: What do you see?’

We want to get your perspective, and your ideas out there. If you have strong feelings on a subject, we want to hear about it. Articles don’t have to be epics, they could only be a couple of paragraphs, but as our platform is a way for you to get your name out there and build up a portfolio for yourself in your free time, you should put some minimal effort in. That being said we do some quality control, just to make sure that your spelling and grammar aren’t all over the shop, and if you would like some feedback we can give that (recommended). We also insist upon our publication being a welcoming space to all and will not publish mean-spirited or hurtful work aimed at abuse or degradation, such as hate-speech. We encourage submissions from all students, be they undergrads, postgrads, international, matures, or access students here on campus. If English is not your first language you’re still welcome. We accept your articles in your first language, but the article, unfortunately, cannot be edited or reviewed by us, so be sure it's to the quality you’re ok to put out there.

Media: Photography is welcome, particularly alongside articles, poetry, or commentary. If you are a photographer, you can come along to our writers’ room (Time TBD) and connect with writers who can help with this. Videos or podcasts are equally welcome, submission the same as everything else, just email us as below.

How to submit your work:

Email us at journalism@socs.nuigalway.ie with the title ‘SUBMISSION’ followed by the title of your article. You can attach it as a word file OR in the main body of the email, we will be able to use it either way.

These guidelines are subject to change, in case something isn’t working for us or we want to streamline the process somehow, so be sure to check back in before submitting just to be sure!

Have a great year and looking forward to seeing your ideas!

All the best.

-Kathy Brasseux, Auditor
