The first Cyprus Game Expo
When going to the Cyprus Game Expo, I didn’t keep my expectations too high — it was the first one after all, so I was pretty sure there was going to be quite a bit of shovelware and ‘retro’ games. Boy, was I wrong. In the expo, there wasn’t one single game that played or looked bad, all of the games were pretty good. Of course, this description isn’t even a proper description. Here’s the real thing.
The event itself
There isn’t much to describe about the event itself. It was small, so small, the whole event took place in a single room in an university. Thank God the event wasn’t advertised well, as it would be a disaster if even a quarter ofthe amount of people who usually visit Comic-con would visit this event. There also weren’t many games, but, well, quality over quantity. Oh, by the way, about the games.
The best games
- 2dGameBuilder by Nicholas Messaritis. The title is quite self-explanatory — a 2d game making tool. It’s still in early stages of development, so you can’t even play the level, only scroll through it. But the best part is that you can export the levels to a PS3, PS Vita or even the original PSP and play them on the console!
- Death and Beyond by eNVy Softworks is a mobile platformer with a twist. While ordinary games have an objective of not dying while having a lot of ways to die, this game’s objective is to solve a puzzle to be able to kill yourself. And it’s surprisingly hard.
- Point and click game without yet a permanent name by Stylianou and Anastasiou (WARNING VERY EARLY VERSION THIS IS PROBABLY THE ONLY FOOTAGE) This is a point’n’click game about a detective who must solve a mystery of a guy being beaten to death. The game graphics don’t fully represent the dark nature, the text descriptions do. And those are some dark descriptions.
- Crash Force by Ascanio Entertainment. Probably the most competent game in the expo. Despite being a pre-alpha, it can be played like a normal game (only by a selected few for now) and the only visible problem is the absence of ammo pickups. The gameplay itself is kind of like Quake on hovercrafts, which is genius yet so simple — why didn’t anyone think of the idea earlier?
