A movie about a female gamer forming her own esports team? Sounds pretty lit!

News has spread all over Twitter about Buzzfeed Studios’ gaming comedy 1UP is in the works. The movie will star Ellen Page (The Umbrella Academy, Inception) and Paris Berelc (Tall Girl, Hubie Halloween).

Berelc’s character is a college gamer who leaves her team after issues with her male teammates. The problem: she’s at risk of losing her gaming scholarship. With the help of a professional esports coach (Page), she builds her own team and battles her way of keeping her scholarship.

While the movie idea seems swell initially, the audiences’ responses didn’t share the same views as the first announcements mentioned Gamergate in the mix.

On November 2, Game Informer announced changes in their original story about the 1UP production. According to them, Buzzfeed PR stated the news revolving around Gamergate as part of the movie’s theme is false. Good news, right?

What is Gamergate?

Gamergate is a hotbed filled with gaming trolls, misogyny, and downright craziness…
