dancing in barbed wire

i have woken
wrapped in barbed wire
tightly wrapped
in barbed wire

its sharpness
piercing my
skin

i know what to do

don’t struggle
or it will punish you
with a relentless
grip

the world has tilted
my stomach full of
the rust
i have been sucking on
all night

i lie there
and breathe
slowly and shallowly
at first
until the barbed wire
loosens a little

enough for me
to rise
and start my day

at first it is restrictive
but the more I accept its company
the looser it becomes
until we
are like friends

dancing to my heartbeat
under the sun
