I put a ring on it!
The man of my dreams said, “yes,” and God was there as He always has been.
It’s just before 5 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019. My eyes are open and my heart is pounding. I can’t sleep any longer. The excitement is kicking in. This is the day I will propose to the man of my dreams.
While I sit quietly in my home office, I listen to our favorite songs, go through our photos and pray to God. The weeks leading up to this moment had been serendipitous. There were so many signs that God was guiding me through this next step in my relationship with Tim.
Tim had been insanely busy the weeks before as he prepared to begin his final year of the Master of Nursing Science (MSN) program at the University of Virginia. He was working and studying constantly.
He was working the Sunday before the proposal. I went to mass alone. This was one of the most reflective experiences of my life. A young girl joined the Church that morning. As we all watched her baptism and receive her First Communion, I had visions of the years to come.
I saw Tim and I continuing to attend mass together and being involved in different ministry groups. Then I saw us around the Baptismal font, welcoming our adoptive children to the Church. I had goosebumps. I could feel God’s presence and see what he has planned for us. He was showing me love and light.
Tim wakes up. He goes through his morning routine. I remain calm. We talk about the weeks ahead and just relax while drinking coffee. Before I knew it, we are getting ready for a prearranged lunch date and driving towards Churchill.
Tim knew a few days before that we were going on a lunch date to celebrate our anniversary early and the beginning of his final year of grad school. Though, he didn’t know where we were going.
Within 20 minutes, we are parking outside the Hill Cafe — the location of our first date. We smile at each other as we walk to the entrance. As we enter, I said to the staff that we have a reservation for two.
The Hill Cafe does not take reservations. Tim forgot about that!
We are escorted toward the back of the restaurant to our booth where we first met. On the table is a framed flash card that reads, “Forever.”
Tim is smiling.
This is a nod to our third date. At the end of dinner that night, Tim went to the bathroom. When he returned to the table, I had three flash cards displayed that hinted at what we could the rest of the night. Tim always says this was the moment I swept him off his feet.
“Forever” doesn’t tip him off. He is getting comfortable in his seat and unfolding his napkin when he realizes I am not sitting across from him yet. He turns to find me on a knee with the open ring box in my hands. He is in shock. He quickly looks around the room to make sure this is really happening. Then I asked the most important question I’ll ever ask in life,
Will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?
“Yes,” he says with tears in his eyes.
I start sliding the ring on his finger and told him,
This is the ring your grandmother gave your grandfather.
I know she wants you to have it now.
Tears start streaming down his face.
We’re standing, kissing and hugging while the restaurant erupts in applause and cheers.
This is one of the greatest moments of my life. The man of my dreams and the king of my heart said, “yes,” and God was there as He always has been.
