Tell me if this sounds familiar to you: Caffeine coursing through your veins, the perfect crescendo of words coming to rest on your screen, and just as you’re about to unleash your latest masterpiece onto the unsuspecting world of Medium, you hit a wall. It’s not writer’s block, but something equally sinister and soul-crushing — the quest for the perfect image.

Don’t get me wrong; stock photos have their place. I love stock photos. But there’s one major problem. I friggin’ love stock photos. There are times I’ve visibly aged between the moment I started searching Unsplash or Pexels to the moment I finally found my perfect image. As a try-hard photographer, I become fixated on all the beautiful photos, trying to find that one perfect standout shot. Because, you know, I’m way too proud to sink as low as using the ubiquitous bespectacled millennial with a faux ‘eureka’ moment expression. Or worse, the generic laptop with a steaming cup of coffee beside it. I mean, c’mon people, it’s like every ‘profound’ thought in the written world can only be punctuated by the same six photographs.
