First Hands-On With ChatGPT Browse; What Can It Do?
Connecting ChatGPT to the live internet
--
This morning I opened ChatGPT Plus to find a welcome sight; the presence of a whole new model listed on my ChatGPT Home screen. As an OpenAI Beta tester, I had signed up for the waitlist on ChatGPT’s new Browse features, which connect the popular chatbot to the live Internet.
Now, all of a sudden, the new Browse model was there and ready to test!
Here are the results from my early testing of the new Browse feature in ChatGPT, and some real-world examples of how this new tool can provide benefits to ChatGPT users.
How the Browse Feature Works
ChatGPT has a well-known limitation — because it was only trained through 2021, the stock version of the popular chatbot has no knowledge of current events.
OpenAI has teamed up with Microsoft to connect ChatGPT to the Internet as part of the Bing search engine. But that integration is limited, and tailored specifically to search.
In March of 2023, OpenAI announced that it would integrate live growing capabilities (as well as selected Plugins) into ChatGPT. They opened a waitlist for the feature (it’s currently still available only via a waitlist). I applied, and got access.
Browse is a new model within ChatGPT, along with GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. You’ll need be a ChatGPT Plus subscribers to use Browse. The new feature lets ChatGPT respond to prompts by browsing the live internet and retrieving information.
Using Browse is simple. You enter your prompt just like you would with the normal ChatGPT.
