New study shows: ChatGPT is taking over

The days of arguing about whether the advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) could trigger a seismic shift in the creative industry are definitely over.

That shift is already underway.

A study by researchers from Washington University, NYU and Harvard now provides some numbers that confirm the gut feeling of many and offer deep insights into the transformation we are witnessing.

Studying ChatGPT’s influence on creative roles

The study is based on data from Upwork, a platform for freelancers, and focuses on how ChatGPT influences creative roles, particularly graphic designers and copywriters.

The figures are very clear:

  • Noticeable decrease in job opportunities and earnings.
  • Roughly 2% fall in monthly job acquisition.
  • About 5.2% drop in monthly earnings post-ChatGPT.
  • Adverse effects are seen across all skill levels.

And the bottom line is not surprising:

  • ChatGPT replaces traditional human tasks and leads to less demand for certain skills.
