Yesterday, Google released its much-anticipated AI image generator for Google Bard. The new release brings Google in line with AI companies Midjourney and OpenAI, both of which have powerful AI image generators on the market.

Since the launch, I’ve been testing Google Bard’s new image generation capabilities extensively.

Here’s what you need to know.

Imagen Gets Its Public Debut

Google was one of the first big companies to pursue AI image generation. The company announced its Imagen system in a research paper back in 2022.

At the time, Imagen sparked a ton of interest and excitement. Then, Google proceeded to sit on the tech for almost two years, while competitors like OpenAI, Stability, and Midjourney marched out commercially available image generators in scores.

Now, the public is finally getting a taste of Imagen after a long, long wait. The entry of a new competitor — and a new technology platform — into the AI image generation space is exciting, even if the long wait makes the release feel a little anticlimactic.
