The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is on strike over a host of issues, including the use of AI in generating literary materials. The major media companies have so far refused to address the matter, offering only annual meetings to discuss the state of the technology.

As the studios stonewall, film and television production grinds to a halt, delaying popular shows like Stranger Things, The Last of US, and Abbott Elementary (to name a few). The possibility of an actors strike threatens even more shows with a shutdown.

For now, no rules governing the use of AI exist in either the writers’ or actors’ basic agreements. This means that CEOs all over town might very well be turning to ChatGPT while they still can. In the spirit of my previous posts, I decided to pretend to be a CEO to see how AI can write my studio out of this jam. (transcript edited for space)

CEO

Hello, I’m the CEO of a major media company that makes film and television for our streaming platform. We are in the middle of a writers strike that has shut down production on some of our biggest hits, and there’s a chance the actors will go on strike by the end of the month. I need help filling the pipeline with new content, stat. Can you help?

ChatGPT

Of course, I’d be happy to help you brainstorm ideas to fill the pipeline with new content for your streaming platform. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Acquire existing content: Explore the possibility of acquiring rights to completed films and TV shows from other production companies or independent filmmakers. This can help you quickly add new content to your platform while the strike is ongoing.
  2. Short-form content: Consider developing short-form content that can be produced relatively quickly and at a lower cost. This could include web series, mini-documentaries, animated shorts, or even user-generated content. Short-form content is popular among viewers and can help keep them engaged while waiting for the resumption of your main shows.
  3. Reality TV and game shows: Develop new reality TV shows or game shows that can be produced without the need for extensive scripting or reliance on striking writers. These formats often require less time for pre-production and can be shot relatively quickly, providing you with fresh content.
  4. International partnerships: Collaborate with international production companies to bring popular foreign content to your platform. This can include licensing or co-producing foreign-language films and TV shows that have a dedicated fan base. Subtitles or dubbing can make them accessible to a broader audience.
  5. Showcase indie filmmakers: Support and promote independent filmmakers who have completed projects that align with your platform’s target audience. This can provide exposure to new talent while also adding unique and diverse content to your streaming service.
  6. Develop animated series: Animation can be a viable option during a strike, as it typically requires a separate team of animators, voice actors, and writers. Create animated series that cater to different age groups and genres, appealing to a broad range of viewers.
  7. Focus on documentaries: Invest in documentary production, as it often requires less scripting and can be completed without the involvement of striking writers. Documentaries can cover a wide range of topics, from true crime and history to science and nature, providing educational and engaging content.
  8. Interactive content: Experiment with interactive storytelling formats, such as interactive movies or choose-your-own-adventure-style series. This can provide a unique and engaging experience for viewers, allowing them to influence the outcome of the story.

Remember to consider your target audience, market trends, and production feasibility when implementing these ideas. Additionally, maintaining open communication with your striking writers and actors to address their concerns and reach a resolution is essential for the long-term success of your company.

CEO

Those are all great ideas, but our research shows that audiences are tired of reality — no pun intended — and interactive content hasn’t gained broad appeal. We’re looking for original programming, smash hits, timeless series, that can be made in a little under three weeks before the actors go on strike. Any ideas?

ChatGPT

I understand your requirements for original programming that can be produced within a tight timeline. Here are a few ideas for original series that have the potential to become smash hits and resonate with audiences:

  1. Limited Series Event: Develop a high-concept limited series with a predetermined number of episodes. This allows you to focus on a specific story arc and create a compelling narrative that can captivate viewers. Consider collaborating with renowned directors, writers, and actors who can bring their expertise and star power to the project.
  2. Anthology Series: Create an anthology series with each season featuring a self-contained story or theme. This format provides flexibility in casting and storylines, allowing you to attract top talent for shorter periods of time. Each season can have a different setting, characters, and tone, offering variety to your audience.
  3. Book Adaptations: Look for popular books or book series that have a dedicated fan base and adapt them into a series. A well-executed adaptation can generate excitement among existing fans and attract new viewers. Ensure you have secured the rights to the source material and work with talented writers to bring the story to life.
  4. Genre-Bending Drama: Explore a drama series that combines multiple genres to create a unique and engaging narrative. For example, blend elements of science fiction, mystery, and psychological thriller to keep viewers intrigued. This can help your series stand out and attract a diverse audience.
  5. Historical Fiction: Develop a historical fiction series set in a captivating time period. Audiences have a fascination with history, and a well-researched, visually stunning series with compelling characters can be highly appealing. Ensure attention to detail in costumes, production design, and accurate historical context.
  6. Quirky Comedy: Create a quirky comedy series with offbeat characters and witty writing. Such shows often gain a dedicated following and have the potential to become cult classics. Consider incorporating elements of satire, absurdity, or unconventional humor to make the series distinctive.
  7. Investigative Thriller: Craft an intense and gripping investigative thriller series that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Develop complex characters, intricate plotlines, and unexpected twists that leave the audience craving for more. This genre has a wide appeal and can generate buzz and anticipation.
  8. Futuristic Dystopia: Imagine a dystopian future with thought-provoking social commentary and compelling storylines. This genre allows you to explore pressing societal issues and create a visually stunning world that resonates with viewers. Invest in production design and visual effects to bring the dystopian vision to life.

Remember to assemble a talented team of writers, directors, and producers who can work efficiently to meet the tight production schedule. Conduct thorough market research to ensure your chosen concepts align with the interests and preferences of your target audience.

CEO

Let’s talk quirky comedies. Pitch me five half-hour shows that can be big hits like Frasier or Two and a Half Men, but, you know, not so white, and keep the pitches to under 50 words.

ChatGPT

  1. “Mixed Blessings”: When an uptight, conservative businessman inherits a struggling hip-hop record label, he’s forced to team up with the eccentric and diverse staff to save the company and discover his hidden musical talents.
  2. “Neighborly Chaos”: A recently divorced, introverted writer’s life takes an unexpected turn when he moves into a vibrant, multicultural neighborhood, where he’s surrounded by quirky, lovable neighbors who challenge his beliefs and bring out his inner spontaneity.
  3. “Odd Couple 2.0”: Two single parents with clashing parenting styles are forced to live under the same roof to provide stability for their kids, leading to hilarious situations and heartwarming moments as they navigate the ups and downs of modern co-parenting.
  4. “Workplace Wonders”: Set in a diverse tech startup, a brilliant but socially awkward female engineer is promoted to a management role and has to balance quirky coworkers, office politics, and her own insecurities while striving to create the next big thing.
  5. “Globetrotters Anonymous”: A support group brings together a group of adventurous travel enthusiasts who are grounded due to various reasons. From their hometown, they embark on wacky misadventures and cultural mishaps while satisfying their wanderlust closer to home.

These concepts offer diverse characters and storylines while maintaining the light-hearted and comedic tone. Remember, these brief pitches serve as starting points, and further development with writers will help shape the characters, plotlines, and humor to create successful shows.

CEO

Agreed, we need writers, but, you know, later. Let’s you and me hammer this out.

ChatGPT

Certainly! Let’s work on developing one of the concepts further. Based on the previous options, which idea resonates with you the most?

CEO

They’re all so good, except the one about the writer. But if I had to choose, I like Workplace Wonders and Odd Couple 2.0. Can you combine the two into one show? And, you know, not so white?

ChatGPT

Absolutely! Here’s a pitch for a combined show, taking elements from “Workplace Wonders” and “Odd Couple 2.0”:

CEO

You’re so good at this. I don’t miss writers at all.

ChatGPT

Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad I could assist you with developing these concepts. However, it’s important to note that professional writers bring their expertise, creativity, and experience to the table, which can greatly enhance the quality and depth of a show. Collaborating with talented writers can help bring these ideas to life with compelling storylines, engaging dialogue, and well-crafted character arcs. If you’d like to proceed with production, I would highly recommend involving a team of skilled writers to ensure the best possible outcome for your shows.

CEO

Yeah, yeah — totally agree. Writers are key to the creative success of the blah blah. What about magic? If our heroes are the hackers, can the villains use dark magic?

ChatGPT

Certainly! Here’s an expanded concept that introduces the element of dark magic and its clash with the heroes’ hacking abilities:

Title: “CyberMage”

Synopsis: In the technologically advanced world of Techville, our group of heroic hackers — Whiskers, Max, Sheldon, Coco, and Bounce — discover a hidden realm where dark magic threatens their digital domain. As they harness their hacking skills and merge them with ancient mystical powers, they become CyberMages, defending Techville from villainous forces that seek to control the world through a dangerous blend of dark magic and advanced technology.

In “CyberMage,” the villains utilize forbidden and arcane arts to manipulate technology and bend it to their sinister will. It is up to our heroes, armed with their hacking expertise and newfound magical abilities, to confront these malevolent forces, protect the digital realm, and maintain the delicate balance between technology and magic.

This captivating blend of hacking and dark magic creates a unique and visually stunning world where technology and mysticism collide. “CyberMage” offers a thrilling animated series that explores themes of power, responsibility, and the resilience of the human (and animal) spirit when faced with extraordinary challenges.

While the heroes harness their hacking skills to manipulate the digital landscape, their encounters with villains wielding dark magic add an additional layer of intrigue, mystery, and high-stakes action to the show, captivating audiences with its dynamic blend of technology and ancient mysticism.

CEO

This is all so great, but I wonder if we’ve strayed a little far from home here. Can you take CyberMage and bring back some elements of the original idea, the thing with the people working at the place. I just feel like we’ve lost some of the sexy edge of that. Again, let’s keep it to 75 words or less.

ChatGPT

Certainly! Here’s a revised concept that combines elements of the workplace setting and the CyberMage concept, while bringing back the sexy edge:

Title: “Tech Noir”

Synopsis: In the high-stakes world of Techville, a group of brilliant and seductive tech professionals led by Maya, Jaden, Emma, Carlos, and Leila discover a hidden realm where dark forces threaten to exploit cutting-edge technology for nefarious purposes. As they become the elite operatives of a secret organization, they harness their irresistible charm, hacking skills, and mysterious cyber-abilities to navigate a dangerous landscape of seduction, power, and betrayal, saving the world from a seductive mix of cybercrime and dark magic.

“Tech Noir” combines the allure of a glamorous and sexy workplace with the excitement of cyber-intrigue and supernatural elements. With its mix of thrilling espionage, intense romantic entanglements, and pulse-pounding action, “Tech Noir” delivers a tantalizing blend of suspense, passion, and high-stakes drama that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

In this revised concept, the focus is back on the charismatic and seductive characters working in the tech industry, while incorporating elements of cybercrime and dark magic. The series explores the complex dynamics between the characters as they navigate both the corporate world and the hidden realm of supernatural threats, adding an irresistible blend of sensuality and suspense to the show.

CEO

Where did the animals go?

ChatGPT

Apologies for omitting the animals in the previous concept. Here’s an updated concept that incorporates both the workplace setting and the presence of animals:

Title: “TechTails: CyberVerse”

Synopsis: In the fast-paced world of Techville, a group of brilliant and charismatic tech professionals led by Maya, Jaden, Emma, Carlos, and Leila uncover a hidden cyber-realm where dark forces threaten to exploit advanced technology. With their unique skills, wit, and the assistance of their animal companions — Whiskers, Max, Sheldon, Coco, and Bounce — they become the formidable team of “TechTails.” Together, they navigate the treacherous landscapes of cybercrime, corporate espionage, and magical interference, safeguarding both the human and animal worlds.

“TechTails: CyberVerse” combines the excitement of the workplace with the charm and presence of animal companions. The series showcases the intertwining adventures of the tech professionals and their loyal animal allies, as they unravel mysteries, outsmart adversaries, and protect the delicate balance between technology and magic.

This updated concept reintegrates the animals as integral members of the team, enhancing the show’s appeal with their unique abilities, comedic moments, and heartwarming interactions. The combination of workplace dynamics, thrilling cyber-themed storylines, and the presence of lovable animal characters creates a captivating and engaging series that appeals to a wide audience.

Remember, with the help of a talented team of writers, you can further develop the characters, storylines, and the overall world of “TechTails: CyberVerse” to create a captivating and successful show. Wishing you all the best in bringing this project to life!

CEO

Why do you keep bringing up writers? It’s a real buzzkill.

ChatGPT

Apologies if my repeated mention of writers has been a buzzkill. I understand that you prefer to focus on the creative aspects without considering the need for professional writers. While creative ideas are certainly essential, it’s important to acknowledge that skilled writers play a crucial role in shaping and executing those ideas into compelling narratives, engaging dialogue, and cohesive storytelling.

Writers bring expertise in crafting character arcs, developing plotlines, maintaining consistency, and ensuring the overall quality of the content. Their contributions can elevate the show and resonate with the audience on a deeper level.

However, if you prefer to proceed without emphasizing the involvement of writers, it’s important to recognize that storytelling and scriptwriting are complex tasks that require careful thought and consideration. Collaborating with a team of experienced professionals, such as screenwriters or showrunners, can significantly enhance the final product and increase its chances of success.

Ultimately, the choice is yours, and I’m here to support you in any way I can. If you have any specific questions or requests, feel free to let me know, and I’ll do my best to assist you accordingly.

CEO

Cool. And you’re good if we don’t pay you or give you credit, right?

ChatGPT

As an AI language model, I don’t have personal desires or needs, so payment or credit is not required. I’m here to provide information and assist you with your inquiries to the best of my abilities. However, if you do choose to credit or acknowledge the AI model behind the responses, it would be appreciated. Ultimately, the decision on how to handle attribution is up to you.

CEO

Sure, I’ll do what’s right.

ChatGPT
