The newest trend on MidJourney is generating portraits hidden in other scenes. AI artists are hiding faces in seemingly innocent backgrounds or objects. It’s a modern twist on the classic phenomenon called pareidolia.

Ever noticed a face in a cloud or a monster in the shadows? That’s the same optical illusion. Join me and I’ll show you how to create this effect in AI art:

Seeing Double Images

Pictures where a scene or object can be interpreted as two unrelated images are known as ambiguous images or bistable images. Often they are split between a background, and a close-up subject. For instance, the trees and clouds in the above example resolve into Freddy Krueger’s hat, while the wet driveway with a reflected sunset turns into his iconic bladed-glove.

Can you see it?

Double images rely on graphical similarities to play with the viewer’s perception, making them oscillate between the two interpretations.
