Anyone who has used ChatGPT and other LLMs extensively over the last 2 years knows that the popular Chatbot is an editor’s nightmare.

LLMs rarely misspell words or use incorrect grammar. But when it comes to cliched words and turns of phrase, they are, to quote one of ChatGPT’s favorite terms, a “game changer.”

The Atlantic published a fantastic article about ChatGPT’s rampant use of cliches last year. “ChatGPT can write you anything, but it can’t write you anything good,” the magazine concluded.

The chatbot loves to pepper its writing with pointless filler words like “Moreseo” and “Furthermore.” It also loves transitions. Every final paragraph of a ChatGPT-written article begins with “In conclusion,” like the expository essay of a bored 7th grader.

ChatGPT also has an inexplicable love of certain expressions that humans rarely use. “Look no further” is such a tell that you can often spot a ChatGPT-written piece of text just be the inclusion of this cliched phrase.

In the travel writing space, every restaurant or attraction is “nestled in the heart” of somewhere else. Every city is “bustling.” If you’re planning any kind of trip or change, you’re “embarking on a journey.”
