A decade from now, we’ll look back at 2023 as the year that generative AI began its inexorable march toward changing everything about how we work, search, and create.

From the insane growth of ChatGPT, to the launch of Google Bard, to the mainstreaming of Midjourney and DALL-E, to the acceleration of AI regulation, 2023 was a huge year for generative AI.

2024 promises to be just as impactful — perhaps more so. While 2023 was the year that humanity discovered gen AI, 2024 will be the first year that we begin to truly feel its impact.

I’ve worked in AI for over a decade. Here are my predictions for generative AI in the year ahead.

The AI Wars Heat Up

2023 was the year of ChatGPT. The uber-popular chatbot took the world by storm, surprising even its developers in its popularity. Big competitors like Google were essentially playing catch-up for most of the year.

Bard started 2023 as an also-ran that could barely compete with ChatGPT. Currently, it’s essentially in the same place.

In 2024, that will change.
