Towards Transformative AI

Generative AI sucks at generating quality content. But it’s amazing at something else.

After using almost every generative AI tool on the planet over the last two years, I’ve concluded: generative AI sucks at actually generating things.

That might seem surprising. Chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude, AI image generators like Midjourney, and new video tools like Luma’s Dream Machine feel like they generate content effortlessly.

But what I’ve found — after generating millions of words and thousands of images — is that their purely generative output looks good on the surface, but is ultimately awful.

That said, generative AI platforms are incredibly good at doing something else. And that’s where their true power and impact lies.

The Suggestion of Furniture

I love shopping at IKEA.

It’s thrilling to walk around a store where you can buy absolutely any home item you can imagine, from a massive sleeper sofa to a box of diminutive tea-light candles.

Everything looks beautiful in the showroom! The tastefully decorated spaces make you want to sell all your belongings and move into a tiny house decked out with Swedish minimalist design.
