In what has been described as an act of political violence, the assasination attempt against former president Donald Trump, with scenes of him being ushered away by the Secret Service with his right ear bloodied, is said to play to the theme of political persecution.

Photographers rushed to capture scenes of the assassination attempt aftermath when a serious lapse in security saw Trump shot in the ear at the US election campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday evening.

The shots were fired moments after Trump, 78, started his speech, injuring him, killing one person and wounding two other rally attendees.

The suspected shooter was identified by the FBI on Sunday morning as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The 20-yr-old who was shot dead by the Secret Service was believed to be a registered Republican. He was seen crawling up to the roof of a building 140 meters from Trump's stage, armed with a rifle.

On Sunday Trump commented on his Truth Social service:

“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win”.

President Joe Biden expressed in a statement that:

“There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it”.

A tweet by possible Trump running mate,
Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, stated that the:

“Central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination.”

Although mass shootings are considered commonplace in America, the last attempted assassination of a US president was in 1981 of Republican President Ronald Reagan.

Following the assassination attempt on Trump, the price of Bitcoin surged to over $60,000. Trump is considered to be favoured as a presidential candidate amongst the bitcoin and crypto community.

As Trump asserted last month in Washington DC: “I will make sure that the future of bitcoin will be made in the US and not driven overseas” and promised to protect the right to hold bitcoin saying “I will support the right to self-custody.”

Meanwhile the Polymarket prediction platform founded by Shayne Coplan, saw the probability of Trump’s return to the White House surge to 70 per cent. According to traders there was also a rise in the “PoliFi” meme tokens. TREMP rose 67 per cent to $0.6471 and BODEN fell by 15 per cent over 24 hours to $0.0333115.
