Developing your life’s operating system
Principles by Ray Dalio
Principles is about the importance of developing, operating from and refining your own personal set of life principles. To make this task less abstract, Dahlio lays out how he’s developed and refined principles for his own life and for his hedgefund, Bridgewater Associates.
All successful people operate by principles that help them be successful. Without principles, you would be forced to react to circumstances that come at you without considering what you value most and how to make choices to get what you want. This would prevent you from making the most of your life.
Why I Chose This
This is one of the most influential essays I read as an undergrad. It was the first thing that taught me to care about my own everyday reasoning, and that these internal machinations could be curated, improved and refined through experience and examination.
As you read Principles, I hope that it leads you to revisit your principles (or develop them) and list a set of target experiences to help you refine them in the coming year.
