Judy Lawrence and Bill Shelton’s love story is an unconventional, yet heart-warming, one. Their first date was the day after Christmas at a high school dance in 1958. Their second first date came 38 years later, and this time, it led to 22 years and counting of a union that began at Glensheen.

After 38 years, we met again at our all school high school reunion and 100th anniversary of our grade school in Mauston, WI. On our second date he asked me to marry him… and I said yes!

Shortly after moving to Duluth, we visited Glensheen. We loved the history, the house and the grounds- so we decided to see if we could get married there.

We set up our wedding for October 19, 1996 at 6 p.m. All six of our kids were in the wedding. It was a beautiful fall day but a little chilly- so we opted to have an indoor ceremony. All of our guests (all family) loved Glensheen! Our wedding was in the entryway. I remember walking down the stairs with my son- it was so beautiful. Glensheen is a wonderful place to get married. Oct. 19, 2018 will be our 22nd year of marriage. — Judy Lawrence

Judy and Bill’s reunion was featured in the Duluth News Tribune multiple times, and it became a community-loved story. After their wedding in 1996, Judy and Bill still remain in Duluth and attend public events at Glensheen. To them, the estate still possesses the same magic they felt when they first visited.

“It was really special,” Judy said.

Though not everyone has a story like Judy and Bill’s, love seems to find it’s way to Glensheen more often than not. Proposals, wedding ceremonies and receptions take place here year round. Whether you get married in 1996 or in 2019, the beauty of the grounds, the history of the mansion and the powerful presence of the lake make Glensheen an enchanting place to celebrate love.
