After reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, I have realized that the story about the death of human kind on Earth and the possibility of humanoid take over is could be a foreshadowing for our world today. The story describes a different Earth, a dying Earth with little nutrients to support more life forms.

The environment of Earth was depicted as a rough terrain covered in radioactive dust. The Earth was essentially destroyed due to World War Terminus. Many people emigrated to Mars and neighboring planets. The toxic dust caused many animals to become extinct, such as raccoon and owls. The lack of animals as well as the religion Mercer (religion of empathy) increased the value of authentic animals.

Rogue androids from neighboring planets infested Earth mimicking humans to avoid detection. No I am not talking about the android phones, I am talking about humanoid robots that are so similar to humans that they could not be distinguished other than taking an empathy test. These rogue humanoids lack empathy making them dangerous since they are willing to kill anyone or anything without any remorse.

This is a scary thought that our home, Earth could turn into such a horrific place in which aliens could hide among us and we would have no idea. We are already destroying our world’s ecosystems everyday. We’ve had two World Wars, are constantly fighting with other countries, and with ourselves. We have investigated Mars and found water. Lastly, we have humanoid robots that are becoming more advanced and similar to real beings.

This story sadly foreshadows a possible universe in which we are no longer an apex predator. Luckily, we have the potential to change that.
