The Global Wine Score is an aggregated of wine experts ratings. It is calculated using a proprietary algorithm . The aim of the Global Wine Score is to give the most objective score using mathematics.

The diversity of wine critics

The input data of the Global Wine Score correspond to all the wine critics ratings: different experts with different tastes, different scales to assess wines and different sensitivities. Fortunately, there is no special reason for them to rate a given wine in the same way. This is why the Global Wine Score represents a consensus of all these ratings.

It is easy to imagine that in this crowd of wine critics, there are many various ratings for a same wine. All these experts possibly agree about some wines by giving close ratings. But it may also happen that the experts give very different ratings. In this case, it is not possible to say that one of these critics has the right rating. Each of them gives an opinion, that’s all!

The confidence index

To introduce this rating diversity into the interpretation of the Global Wine Score, a confidence index is available in the technical sheet for each wine on www.globalwinescore.com.

This confidence index ranges from C (the lowest confidence) to A+(the highest).

It is based on the standard deviation and the number of ratings. The standard deviation represents the overall scattering between all the ratings. In the Global Wine Score case, the number of ratings corresponds to the number of critics having rated the wine scored (knowing that a minimum of 3 ratings is required).

There are two ways to get a good confidence for a Global Wine Score:

  • low disparity between all the ratings aggregated
  • numerous ratings used in the aggregation

A good confidence index corresponds either to close critics ratings and/or to numerous ratings used in the aggregation of the score.

At the opposite, a bad confidence index corresponds to big deviations between the ratings and/or few ratings used in the calculation of the score.

Conclusion

The Global Wine Score represents a single score in assessing wines. The confidence index brings a true benefit in its interpretation by giving a global idea on the consensus reached by the critics having rated the wine concerned.

Of course, when many critics rated a wine the Global Wine Score stands strongly.

But, when a wine has only few contrasting ratings, it tells you that the critics disagreed in assessing the wine…

… then, it is up to you to build your own opinion by tasting the wine!
