Adaptogens are all the buzz in the wellness world, but what are they exactly, and how do you decide which are best for you?

Adaptogens are non-toxic plants that are marketed as helping the body resist stressors of all kinds, whether physical, chemical or biological. There have also been a number of studies showing the positive effects of adaptogens. Whether it’s providing the body with energy, eliminating toxins, or helping utilize oxygen more efficiently, adaptogens may help normalize imbalances to help you live your best life.

Here’s what you need to know about some of the most popular adaptogens available!

Amla

Amla, commonly known as the Indian Gooseberry, is a digestive aid, and is extremely rich in Vitamin C! Packed with antioxidants and minerals, Amla is well known for:

  • Supports a healthy immune response
  • Supports youthfulness and memory
  • May promote healthy bowel regularity

Amla has a strong taste, and is often used as a powder in coconut-based smoothies where the flavor will offset the bitterness.

Ashwagandha

The primary benefit of this shrub is to protect the body against the effects of toxic stress. Also known as the “winter cherry” and the “Indian ginseng,” Ashwagandha:

  • May support healthy cortisol levels
  • Can aid in healthy sleep
  • Supports a healthy response to stress and fatigue

Ashwagandha is also rich in iron, and can be used as support for women with heavy periods.

It’s often used in teas, and has a slightly bitter taste. You can also purchase Ashwagandha capsules for all the support without the taste.

Holy Basil

Holy Basil, or Tulsi, is considered to be one of the most powerful and sacred Indian herbs, and has been used as a natural medicine for over 3,000 years. Commonly drank as a tea, or used as a topical tonic, Holy Basil:

  • Maintains a healthy digestive system.
  • Supports a healthy immune response
  • Promotes a healthy respiratory system.
  • May relieve headaches
  • Promotes healthy skin

Look for Holy Basil tea at natural grocers. It doesn’t taste like conventional basil; rather it’s very clove-like and slightly spicy. It’s the perfect calming tea for your evening routine.

Rhodiola

Also known as the “golden root,” Rhodiola is an adaptogen filled with fat-burning, energy-enhancing and brain-boosting properties. A succulent grown in cool, northern climates, Rhodiola:

  • Supports healthy brain function
  • Promotes energy
  • May reduce physical and mental fatigue

Many take Rhodiola in capsule form, but its sweet and slightly bitter taste makes a tasty cup of tea. (You can add a small amount of honey if desired.)

Maca

Eaten as a vegetable in Peru, Maca is only available in dried and powder form in the US. While there are eight different varieties of Maca, each with a slightly different profile of vitamins and minerals, Maca is primarily valued for its hormonal health properties in men and women. Maca:

  • Supports healthy estrogen levels
  • May alleviate symptoms of menopause
  • Enhances energy, mood, and memory

Maca has an earthy, nutty taste and is also commonly taken as a tea. It’s also great for smoothies!

The list of body-boosting adaptogens goes on and on. If you’re looking to get your glow on in more ways than just collagen, incorporating adaptogens into your diet can be an easy way to do just that. We always recommend taking the proper dosages of each (which can vary by product), as well as consulting your doctor before beginning any new supplements if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition.
