You don’t need a lot of gear to start running, but you do need a great pair of running shoes. Choosing the right high-quality pair will help you stay healthy, run farther and enjoy the experience.

The endless choices can be overwhelming, so we’ll help you narrow down your decision. This is what to look for to find the right pair for you:

Determine your needs

Many brands offer multiple models, which makes it easier to find a shoe ideal for you. The hardest part is figuring out what your needs are first.

Consider the type of running you’ll be doing. If you’re planning to train for a half or full marathon, you’ll likely need a shoe with more support. However, a minimal shoe may be the best fit if you’re focusing on three to five miles a few times a week.

Trail running requires more grip and support than road running, so many runners own two pairs for these purposes.

Your foot’s shape is another consideration. If you have high arches, you’ll need a different shoe than those with flat feet. Overpronators benefit from a stabilizing, structured shoe to address the foot rolling inward, while underpronators typically prefer a cushioned model to combat the foot rolling outward.

If you pay attention to how your foot strikes the ground, you can determine if your overpronate or underpronate. A specialty running store can also help you determine your stride.

You may have heard runners say, “I need more shoe,” or “That model is too much shoe for me.” This means the shoe offers either too little or too much support, which can make a big difference when running more than a few miles.

Many running stores offer shoe fittings, and it can be a great resource for new runners. They will also analyze your gait helping you find the right shoe. Runner’s World magazine has a powerful shoe finder tool if you don’t live near a running store.

Previous models may differ

It can be tempting to order the same pair of running shoes again if you’ve liked your current pair. In the five to six months between purchases, be aware the new model may differ. While the changes are often minimal and provide benefits, some runners dislike the change.

Head to a running store to try other brands if the new model of your favorite shoe doesn’t feel right. Employees are very knowledgeable about comparable models and can help you find just the right pair.

Don’t assume a shoe on clearance is the same as the store model. If you were fitted for a Mizuno Wave Rider 20, but a Wave Rider 18 is on clearance, the fit likely will be different. Make sure you try them on and compare them before purchasing. We love a good deal as much as you do, but it’s important to buy the right pair.

Expect to spend between $100 to $150 on a high-quality pair of running shoes. (Previous models may be cheaper.)

Fit and function over style

There are as many color palettes as there are running shoes, but it’s important to focus on fit and function first. An improper fit can lead to blisters, lost toenails and injury.

Many runners buy a half size up to ensure enough room for their toes. This is particularly important for long-distance running.

After considering a shoe’s fit and support, then you can select a color. Of course, you should like the look of your shoe, but once again, it’s important to choose a great-fitting shoe.

Finding the right running shoe is essential to enjoying the sport. You can figure out your specifications by analyzing your body mechanics, personal preference and type of running. Then it’s finally time to get out and run once you’ve laced up that perfect shoe!
