The title is the writing prompt. The story is fiction. On the other hand it was inspired by the prompt. In truth the melody was never forgotten and the hall was never empty.

The Stage is Set

The Cobra arm of the vintage player slept, locked secured in its cradle while tunes from the, AM-only radio. filled the room. It was Top-40 radio. They specialized in pandering to youths like us. A frantic DJ, babbled on as though he had only recently consumed 10 or more cups of coffee in just the last hour. I don’t know what kind of an example he was trying to set. It would be years before energy drinks could accomplish similar feats of caffeination.

Somewhere in the stream of his constant blathering the DJ prepared us to hear a new song. It was going to something special. Spinning this record would be an exclusive event. This song would not be heard anyplace else, at least not for another 30 minutes or so.

We were standing, her and I. Me, awkward and boastfully shy, trying to keep in the bad light so as to keep any new blemishes hidden. From where i stood her face glowed, even her hair glowed. She wore a blouse — well of course, what else…
