Building a Community Within a Community

GoDo officially has a Head Quarters! You can find us kicking it at The Ville Cooperative on the second floor.

The Ville is a repurposed elementary school that was closed in 2013. It’s now a community-centric cooperative providing the community with progressive, health-related opportunities. There is a huge community garden in the yard, a rock climbing wall in the gym, and even a vermiculture room in the basement.

The land of possibility

What used to be classrooms are now available for rent as office space. Not only do we now have room for all our sticky notes, but we also get to be surrounded by really smart (and cool) people. Our friends at SomaDetect are also just down the hall!

When we were looking for a space, what we really wanted was community. We wanted our office to allow for ideas to flow through it. Not just the same ideas that we have. We want perspectives and opinions that we don’t share. We want to hear what others are thinking and why they think that way.

That’s why we chose to set up camp at The Ville. In a given day, we can be introduced to people with a whole spectrum of interests.

So far, we’ve met someone working to end youth homelessness through agricultural programs, another who’s building homemade solar panel powered canoes out of his garage, and a group pitching to start heating the building with the exhaust of cryptocurrency miners.

It’s hard not to have some of their passion and drive rub off on us.

We also really wanted to give our room an upgrade. Since we’ve moved in on January 10th, we’ve taken down all the old-school wooden panels and are starting to rebuild the walls.

Day 1 — Typical 1960’s classroom
Day 2 — Let’s see what’s hiding under those panels
Day 3 — Peak dustiness featuring Erin and her guitar
Day 10 — Huge thanks to our friends at Grant Thornton for helping clear out the junk!
Day 15 — Drywall going on up

Were looking forward to sharing our space with everyone once it’s no longer a construction site.

If you’re ever in the neighbourhood, please stop by and teach us something.

Creatively, Stew
