Elrond and the Intrusion of Tolkien’s Legendarium Into His Children’s Stories

The Hobbit — Ch. 3. A Short Rest — Although The Hobbit is considered the prequel to the Lord of the Rings, when it was first written, it didn’t even belong to the legendarium

This is a very short chapter, after all, and one that to me, seems mostly of transition.

The Last Homely Home stands on the border between the ‘civilised’ lands and the Wilderness beyond. Bilbo and the Dwarves take a short rest here before they go into a more dangerous adventure, and it looks like a deep breath before the plunge.

Elron may be the only character Tolkien consciously took from his legendarium and placed in the The Hobbit

In this liminal place, Bilbo meets who I think was –at the time of composition — the only character Tolkien consciously took from his legendarium and placed in the story. Though I have to admit that Elrond here plays a small part and not at all in connection with the character he already was in the legendarium. He could have been any elf character, if not for his name.
