Expressway accident involving three vehicles leaves 17 dead, 45 injured

A luxury bus crashes into two stationary cars on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

A gruesome accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway involving a luxury bus and two private four- wheelers, left 17 persons dead and 47 injured, early Sunday morning, Highway police said. The accident took place at around 5.30 am, when a Swift car and an Innova were dashed by a tourist bus. All the three vehicles were on their way to Mumbai.

Highway police deputy commissioner Nitin Pawar said,” The Swift car in lane number 1 to Mumbai, had stopped due a puncture at Shedung. The driver of the Innova car had stopped to help the driver of the Swift, when a luxury bus of Nikhil Travel, Satara, crashed into the Innova, sending all three vehicles plunging down 40 feet.

“The passengers were immediately rescued by the locals. Most of the victims are from Satara, while the others are from Pune, Navi Mumbai and Thane. The injured persons were taken to MGM, Gandhi and Panacea hospitals in Panvel. The 17 dead include ten women, six men and a child.”

The Highway police lad taken ADR and were trying to contact the families of the deceased and injured.

The bus driver died on the spot, while the occupants of the private cars were still being identified.
