As they say: Leaders aren’t born, they are made.

And for many — if not most — leaders, their initial transition into leadership roles was difficult and stressful. Most leaders were previously individual contributors, and their understanding and expectations were misguided.

In this article I will share my insights on the 3 L framework for new leaders based on my own experiences. If you are a new leader, or hiring or promoting a new leader on your team, read on!

#1 Listen

For all the chatterboxes and extroverts out there, this is by far the most difficult one. Managers are generally seen as those who must communicate, and that’s 100% true. However, communication is not just speaking. In fact, a major part of communication is listening. I will go so far as to say that:

“Communication is 1% speaking and 99% listening.” — The Good Boss

And as new managers you need to spend a majority of your time listening. You need to listen to your boss, listen to your team members, listen to your colleagues. You need to pay attention, and embrace your new role with an open mind.

#2 Learn

But it doesn’t stop at listening. As a new manager you need to take that a step further…
