The Good Life Fall ‘23

I believe everyone in life has a vocation or a calling to help them find what they are supposed to do in life. I also think it comes in different times in life. For example I don’t exactly know what my vocation is yet but I have an idea of what I want it to be. A good example of someone following their vocation is Martin Luther King Jr.. King Jr. knew what his calling was because of his life experiences and what he had faced growing up. Butler talks about the many different things that effects King Jr. such as family, church, community, and education. Butler also throws out many ideas of why Kings calling is what it is. “Was it both the subjective and objective overt racism and oppression he had directly experienced both in his own life and as reflected in the total network of social institutions that governed the society in which he lived?” is just one idea Butler gives us. King faced many different adversities growing up. He had to face racism which is one of the reasons he was called the way he was. He grew up with reverends as a parent and as in-laws. The way King was raised had a great deal in how he shared the gospel and how he treated others. Butler tells us,” Martin came perilously close to hating all white people, but his parents taught him otherwise.” Because of the life King lived and how he was raised his vocation was to help others and to stand up for himself and others who couldn’t stand up for themselves.
