Alasdair Macintyre explores the many concepts of the word “good.” I believe the word “good” has different definitions and different understandings from people. The way people interpret every word is different. The word good has five different meanings. The most common one being “being morally right.” Another definition of the word “good” is “benefit or advantage to someone or something”. An example of this would be doing something good for mankind like picking up trash. Another example of a definition is better or best. For example making a good choice or choosing the better choice. I also think it is possible for a word to have multiple meanings, that is called polysemous. An example of a word that is polysemous is “duck”. One version of a duck is an animal. The other is when you lower your body suddenly. Words have different meanings based on their context not the word itself. If every word had one hard-stuck definition it would make language and communication more clear. On the other hand it would also make writing and communication more difficult. If a word had one hard-stuck definition we wouldn’t be able to use context to change the definition of the word. Everyone makes every word there own when they talk or write. That is why we need context to interpret words. The word “good” is a very flexible word. Overall I don’t think words should have one hard-stuck definition because we use context to determine the meanings or word and the way the author expresses the word helps us figure out the meanings.
