The philosopher Xunzi said in his first poem starts off with “People’s nature is bad.” He then goes in saying that people are born with the fondness of wanting things that are unattainable or attainable over time. In my opinion i think that people aren’t born into being good or bad, rather they are born innocent and are influenced by their surroundings. Then once they are older they make the choice whether to be good or bad in nature. Xunzi kind of agrees with me in his first poem saying “Now since peoples nature is bad, they must await teachers and proper models, and only then do they become correct” In that retrospect he is saying that people are bad in nature from birth, but they can become good if they find a teacher or role model to put them down the right path. In that if people are born bad and are bad in nature how are their teachers that can teach people how to be good? With this line he kind of confused me because he is basically going back on what he is stating in the beginning. Throughout his observations he states that people often desire to be good showing this longing desire to have more than what they already have, like how the poor long to become rich or how someone longs to become noble, etc. In that he sparks the question of have we always been born with some good nature and we need teachers to bring it out or are we just bad in nature all together?
