Throughout Harding’s story, he lists many callings he experienced in his life. These callings varied from what college to attend to what job he should specifically pursue. Harding says, “ Callings are a strange thing. I know what it means: I am a witness, in spite of myself, beyond myself, and their voices must be heard.” When he says, “must be heard” he means that callings are not something that should be ignored. We receive them for a reason, and they are not random. They may seem random or appear at an unexpected time in our lives, but we will figure out the true meaning behind them one day. Callings tend to be a gut feeling that brings an idea to your attention. Callings can help lead you to the correct track you should be on in your life. Many people receive callings, whether they realize it or not. Harding also adds the fact that we can hear other people that can intertwined into our callings. Like his future children, he heard them in his callings because his children will be a massive part of his future, and his callings can bring him to his children, or they will impact them. Another reason he could hear the voices of his future wife and children in his callings was because some ideas of his callings include him being a good husband and father to his family. A calling does not have to lead you to a profession; it can also be any idea that will lead you to become the best version of your future self.
