It Only Takes a Spark

Susan Blum’s personality and free spirit jump off the pages of “I Love Learning, I Hate School.” Throughout the article, you could feel how much Blum truly cared for her students and the next generation’s education. Her entire concept for her writing was not to have it all figured out, but to “add to the conversation.” I think this is a noble and intelligent way to approach changes in society. Too often people believe if they shove a solution down everyone’s throats society will jump on board. However, that is never the case. America is built on differing opinions and beliefs, yet we band together to defend our freedom. Thus, we do not take kindly to others telling us what to do. Blum recognizes the chance to spark conversations. Education needs to be talked about, it is not perfect. So many people, even my close friends, have entered college with no intention of using their degree or concept for what they want to be in the outside world. Society has brainwashed people into believing college is one size fits all when that is not necessarily the case. I believe people should be comfortable doing what they love and exploring what they think they might want to be. If college does not sound appealing at the age of 18, but at 25 they decide to go back and study to be a doctor, let them. They should be accepted and celebrated for continuing to grow in their education in any field. Not everyone is going to take the same path in life and our methods of education should support that.
