Martin Luther King Jr, advocated for peaceful approaches to some of society’s biggest problems. He arranged marches and protests and was a key figure to the civil rights movement. He believed racial injustice in America and encouraged his audience to hold their country accountable. MLK King knew his vocation and lived it.

“Family, church, community, education pushed him in the direction of “vocation as social movement” — that is, how his family heritage, his deep roots in the Black Church, and the sense of responsibility and dignity which he animated in his community and in his education universalized his “traditional vocation” into a worldwide social movement.” (Butler)

We all have a purpose in life. When it comes to having a vocation, I think everyone in life ends up having this type of “calling.” This calling can help us find or figure out what we are supposed to do in life. MLK’s vocation involved him fighting for economic equality. He believed Vocations are “masks of god.” He got this calling from the unfair treatment that was being given. King pursued a nonviolent, moral revolution and a vision of a world without violence, hatred, war, and poverty.

I think vocations can happen anytime in our lives. I think we get them when they are unexpected. I wat to say, I have found myself getting these “callings” weather it was relationships, school, sports, etc. I also believe, when we do get these callings, it’s important that we follow them because they can lead to something better than we could imagine. I think it’s important for us to live by these vocations because they can be what’s better for us.
