Self-Expression In Work

Most people construct their lives around the concept of things they genuinely enjoy. We make time for the things and people that make us happy and allow them to hold a semi-permanent or permanent space in our own personal world. The same goes for career searches. We look for careers that fuel and support our passion for hobbies and interests. Marsha Sinetar describes this relationship in “Do What You Love and Money Will Follow”.

I believe we are a transactional society, and we are given natural gifts and abilities for a reason. If we are lacking in an area, then we can depend on someone else who excels where we lack. Sinetar stated, “We are meant to work in ways that suit us, drawing on our natural talents and abilities as a way to express ourselves and contribute to others.” In a perfect world, this would be a fitting and fundamental way to live.

In reality, we go to school and take courses that fit our interests. On the lower hand, we have to hope that our interests have enough demand in society for us to make any difference in our lives. We have to pay for our necessessities and provide for our family under the guise that simply doing what we love is the answer to having money. This simply is not always the case. I think that it is important to have a main source of income and allow our hobbies to be a sort of side gig. We should still allow ourselves and others to enjoy our gift while we create stability for ourselves and our future.
