Rioting as Flourishing?

After reading the first couple of paragraphs in the Sarah MacDonald & Nicole Symmonds reading, the start of Page 26 really stuck out to me. “ Although he critiqued the rioters, King more heavily critiqued white society and policymakers for the deprivations giving rise to the riots. Furthermore, he recognized how rioting represents a needed emotional catharsis for oppressed people.” When I first read this paragraph, it reminded me of how Martin Luther King fought for change in a peaceful manner. But As we look on the Black lives matter movements today, the only protest’s that are broadcasted are the riots. Back during quarantine when there were riots in Atlanta due to George Floyd’s life being taken away by someone abusing their power as an authoritative, many Black Americans were devasted and felt anger within their hearts to see another black man leave this world in such a manner. When the Black community attempts to fight for this change the way King did, it doesn’t recieve that much coverage or we’re not heard. The only way we’re able to gain everyone’s attention is if we destroy everything? Even though this is a rhetorical question, I personally feel as though that the Black community has dealt with hatred for eons now, and it’s sad to say that the only we’re able to seek justice for the victims of police brutatliy is to riot. It shouldn’t be this way, but if they can’t hear us peacefully, how else will we get our point across.
