Thoughts on Macintaire’s thoughts (Week 5)

I agree with Alasdair Macintyre that life would be so much simpler if there were laid out virtues that all of humanity could agree upon and that everyone valued and stood by. Sadly, though, this is not the case. People are incredibly complex individuals with varying “traditions” and experiences that have made them who they are today. Everything that happens in our lives helps shape who we are on every level, including thought processes, emotionally, spiritually, and so much more. That is what makes people so special; we can all pull from our lives to help teach and show one another differing perspectives and ideals. Would it be easier if everyone thought the exact same way? I say definitely, but I don’t realistically think that will ever happen because of the fact that we already have so many differences and no level of control can decide infinetively who someone will become. I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing, though. Part of what makes this world so enjoyable is learning about other people’s traditions and cultures that help mold every individual into who they end up being. This sharing of culture and experiences is what I believe really holds humanity together.
