The Good Life: Spring 2024

In this week’s reading, The Ethics of Authenticity by Charles Taylor one thing that I want to talk about is what was talked about on page 54. There was a point where they were talking about how we define things constantly in conversation with, and maybe in defiance of, the identities that our partners wish to see in us. Also, the dialogue we have with our parents and other elders persists within us for as long as we live, even after we outgrow them, and they pass away. This being said in the passage Taylor carefully examines how the expectations and opinions of those closest to us as in significant others and how they have an impact on our identities as a whole. This leads to our concept of self-being shaped more by the relationships and interactions we have with people other than ourselves and who we surround ourselves with. A way this can come back and correlate to having a good life is I agree with this statement, and I believe that family and significant others are a part of my identity and who I have become today. Its good not to forget these things and never forget where you came from.
