The paragraph I want to focus on for this week’s reading is paragraph two. In this paragraph, I want to understand the word virtue’s deeper meaning. When the definition of virtue is looked at, what is given to you is a trait of excellence including traits that may be moral, social, or intellectual. Now taking that and applying it to the reading, paragraph two talks about victims of oppression and how they face direct barriers to flourishing no matter how successful they maintain the virtues. This suggests that oppressed individuals face significant obstacles that prevent them from thriving or achieving their full potential, regardless of how virtuous or successful they may be. Another part of the passage I would like to focus on is when it states, “When oppression results in deprivation of the material conditions of living well or in deprivation or traumatizing experiences, virtue will certainly be insignificant for securing the wellbeing of oppressed people”. The first part emphasizes that oppression often leads to the denial or limitation of resources and opportunities necessary for individuals to live fulfilling lives. This deprivation could encompass basic needs such as food, shelter, healthcare, education, and economic stability.
