The Good Life: Spring 2024
2 min readFeb 22, 2024

I love learning, I hate school might be my favorite reading from this semester. Maily because I understand completely where they’re coming from, the article states that as humans its in our nature to learn and I agree with this, but I believe that the current education system in place is making children / college students despise learning. Education is extremely normalized in today’s society, with the majority of children being enrolled in some form of schooling. Children are forced to sit in classrooms, do in class assignments, study, then are expected to do more assignments at home. This takes place 5 days a week, with some kids still doing work, like essays, over the weekends. This can quickly lead to burn out and resentment for any form of schooling, even if the individual loves learning new information. The article states, “Youth need to learn; workers need to know things; citizens need to be informed. But the system of schooling that keeps people virtual incompetents into their twenties, always trying to please teachers in order to be evaluated by uniform standards, stuffing unwanted information and skills into their distracted brains, delaying responsibility and promising an always deferred payoff.” This shows that the education system has slowly diverted from teaching children relevant information over the last couple of years. I believe when children reach high school, they should be taking classes that prepare them for the real world, classes over the economy, 401K, how to be financially literate, etc. I also think they should be allowed to select classes that pertain to what they may want to major in if they choose to go to college. This would allow them to find what they are interested in and could help prepare them for their major specific college courses. I think people need to be educated in some form in order to live a good life, and that a reformed education system would help achieve this as well.
