The Good Life: Spring 2024

In this portion of Is Life Worth Living in the Anthropocene, the text initially starts by going into describe that peoples meaning in life may depend on continued existence after one’s death. It explains that people may only value their life for its contributions after death. The text argues, “First, projects that depend on long-term efforts (e.g., curing cancer) could no longer be completed. Second, the longevity of the things we value would be curtailed.”I agree with what the author is arguing. Some peoples whole purpose of living is to havetheir work remembered and make a difference in society. If that society is taken away days after someone’s death, there would be no point in continuing working or to go as far as saying there is no point in living. In addition, the text says that it may just be leaving a legacy that makes an individual have a purpose in life. Which again, gets disregarded in the hypothetical scenario of everyone dying shortly after you. If these are your motivations for living, then it would be easy to lose a purpose of life if one knows their time on earth and everyone else’s time is soon to be finished.
