Bag Milk. Ketchup Potato Chips. Chocolate Smarties. These are just a few ways that food in Canada differs from food in the United States. While the United States considers itself to be a melting pot it doesn’t seem to be as committed to presenting the cuisine from other countries. Canada is a multicultural country that presents a number of different food options that are better than the American options. I’m from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the amount of different cultures within the city itself, creates a large amount of food choices. Choices like: Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Filipino, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indian and my all-time favorite, Caribbean foods. This wide variety of food can change depending on what part of the city you are in. A lot of different cultures like to reside in certain areas of the city making it their own home away from home. Going to a certain area in Toronto, a place may be called, “Little Italy” or “Little Philippines”, that is the area where you can get their kind of food without it being “Americanized”, influenced by other American manufacturers. This makes the food one hundred percent authentic, the tastes are like the ones in the foreign countries where it originates.

Milk in a Bag

On the other hand, American food seems to be largely based on processed foods. In a interview with Joseph Chartouny from Montreal,Canada, he said “from my experience, I feel like the food in Canada is less processed. Also, Canada has more diversified food and their portions are way smaller.” The food in Canada is a lot fresher and sometimes even healthier than American food. Canada makes a commitment to keeping their produce fresh for the quality of food that they want to maintain in the country. One example of the fresh food we have Canada is having milk in a bag rather than a carton or a jug. Milk in a bag makes it so that we don’t have huge portions of milk we can’t possible use within the time you bought the milk till the expiration date. Milk in a bag will give you the right amount you need so that your milk stays fresh and you don’t get close to having to use milk by the expiration date. Along the same conversation about milk, Canadians actually have healthier milk. The hormones found in milk in the United States are banned in Canada.

In my opinion, that’s the difference between Canadian Cuisine and American; American food is most of the time being prepared by people who aren’t from the countries of the food they are serving. Therefore, the food gets “Americanized”, created as a replica of their own, not making it as good as it can potentially.
