In its twelve-year long journey of hunting and killing monsters, supernatural has finally decided to dwell in the world of dinosaurs. Before going on its winter hiatus, the mid-season finale ended with Sam, and Dean teleported to a strange world and found themselves inside a giant footprint.

A similar scene was shown in the 1998 blockbuster film “Godzilla” where Dr. Nick Tatopoulos had seen the first proof of a living dinosaur.

Supernatural is actively exploring parallel universe theory this season. It all began when Jack was about to born, and the walls between the universes were getting thinner.

It allowed Sam and Dean to explore another world where apocalypse was reigning. Michael had killed Lucifer and now running havoc in that world. Our little prophet Kevin is also alive and kicking with Archangel Michael as shown in the episode “The War of the Worlds”.

Dream Walking

The latest episode introduced a new type of superpower, i.e., dream walking — a close relative of psychic abilities. Dream walkers can see parallel universes, and Jack found one of them to help in his cause. But, what was his cause?

Dean suspected that Jack was looking for his father as he had abandoned them. However, it turned out that Jack was trying to find a way to help Mama Winchester. He reached a dream walker to find out where was Mary kept and finally able to get into that world.

A crucial detail, missed by many viewers, was Dean’s vehemence once he found out that Mary was alive and under captivity. He forced Kaia at gunpoint to help them in carrying out the rescue mission for Mary. Kaia’s fear of going to the bad place was comprehensible so Dean getting stuck in that place is nothing but poetic justice.

The good news is that Jack had successfully reached Mary at the end of the episode. The bad news is that he no longer has support of dream walkers or hunters. The question is how he would prison break Marry and bring her to the real world. If he manages to do it, he would certainly redeem himself from his past mistakes.

However, there is a small mishap of Landing Went Wrong.

Sam and Dean teleported into another parallel universe which was termed as the bad place. Why it is called the bad place, we don’t know anything about it except the skeletons and a giant footprint on it.

Whatever it is, it is exciting nonetheless; albeit a small catch.

It is exciting for all the wrong reasons as it is not really a Supernatural story line. It is the backdoor pilot of “Wayward Sisters”. In the upcoming spin-off series, Sheriff Jody Mills will be seen teaching young girls how to kill monsters.

Supernatural has been a home to the male hunters for more than a decade. The only female characters, that lasted more than a season, were Alan and Jo who died long back in Season 5. Sheriff Jody Mills is perhaps the only exception to the rule and none of us want to see her dying.

She possess more maternal feelings for Sam and Dean than Mary does since her reincarnation. She is like a more stable, non-drunk version of Bobby Singer. She would be a great mentor for all the wayward girls like Claire, Annie, Patience and Kaia.

Meanwhile, Supernatural is not about hunting monsters. Its about two brothers who stuck to each other against all odds. Its the human factor that makes everything real and relatable. Whether the same narrative structure work for the adaptive family of Sheriff Jody Mills or not is rather debatable.

Supernatural returns on 18th January 2018 at 9:30 pm with a fresh episode, “Wayward Sisters”.
