Clay always appears when I make a hole for a new plant in my yard.

I add organic material at the bottom of the hole and sides of the root ball. This ensures healthy roots and improves the soil structure.

Clay soil, dense and obstinate, often challenges the aspirations of even the most dedicated gardeners. But take heart — what appears to be a stubborn adversary can be tamed and transformed into a fertile ally.

What is Clay Soil?

Clay soil is characterized by its minute, tightly packed mineral particles. This fine texture results in compact, heavy soil that struggles with drainage. When wet, it clings to your boots and tools like a determined adversary; when dry, it hardens into an almost impenetrable crust. Its propensity to retain water and nutrients, while potentially beneficial, often suffocates the plant roots.
