Plant Therapy for Cleaner Air, Fewer Allergies and Headaches

How to choose and care for the best air-purifying plants for your home

Before accumulating as many plants as I have, I started with a few to fill empty spaces in my house.

Soon, these empty spaces were filled with plants like a money tree, lucky bamboo, pothos, arrowhead, spider, and a few African violets and orchids.

First, I enjoyed the color of their leaves and blooms.

Years later, I learned some of these plants would help purify the air in my house.

When we keep the windows closed in the cold months, emissions and particles from agents like the following can cause headaches, allergies, asthma, and fatigue:

  • Paint
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Furniture
  • Mold spores
  • Allergens
  • Dust
  • Pet dander

Air-purifying plants

These plants act as air filters that soak up carbon dioxide and release oxygen, making the air cleaner and healthier.
