Whether you know Kanye West because of his music, his Yeezy collaboration with Adidas, or his outspoken views, he is a well known name across the globe. West is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and fashion designer. He is among the most critically acclaimed musicians of our century, and one of the best-selling music artists of all time; with over 140 million records sold worldwide. He has won a total of 21 Grammy Awards, making him the most Grammy awarded artist of his generation. His previous albums have consisted of hip hop and rap however, with the release of his ninth album, he decided to present his first Gospel album.

Jesus Is King consists of 11 tracks and is 27 minutes long. It has reached number one on the Billboard 200, making it Kanye’s ninth consecutive debut at number one. The album is filled of hand claps, warm piano notes, a sense of euphoria, and a beautiful service choir.

Kanye explains important life messages in this album that go beyond what most recent hip hop music is giving us. For example “Closed On Sunday” illustrates that we should focus on family, and not nonsense taking place in the media. In the song he sings, “Hold the selfies. Put the Gram away. Get your family. Hold y’all hands and pray.” In today’s society it feels like we need to be reminded of the things that truly matter in life, and this album humbles us.

Kanye is one of the most controversial celebrities of all time, therefore this different and unique album has received many mixed reviews and ratings in the media. However, this album still deserves a listen by all, especially his fans. Overall, the most likable part of Jesus Is King is its sincerity, and sense of peace. Kanye finally sounds at ease with himself, which has been missing for awhile now.
